Gilbert the Grizzly
A Carved Concrete 'Bearadise' for an Orphaned Grizzly
Building a Forever Home for Gilbert the Grizzly Cub
As an independent craftsman, I’ve poured my heart into projects like six-figure stone cladding, natural stone fireplaces, and serene swim-ponds. Each is rewarding, but none hold a candle to the enclosure we built for Gilbert, an orphaned grizzly cub who needed a forever home. This project wasn’t just about stone and concrete—it was about giving a young bear a chance to thrive, and it’s a story I’ll carry with me forever.
The Challenge: A Cub in Need
Gilbert, a grizzly cub from Montana, was orphaned after a tragic hunting accident took his mother. Facing euthanasia, he was rescued by Wildlife Images, a rehabilitation center in Oregon, who scrambled to prepare a temporary holding pen. Their dream was to give Gilbert a stimulating forever home with a pond, waterfall, and cave, but after digging the pond and laying rebar, an injury and harsh winter weather stalled the project. For three months, Gilbert waited in his cramped pen, and the unfinished enclosure sat as a muddy, unusable hole.
When I was called to “spruce up” Gilbert’s cave, I saw the bigger picture: a half-finished pond and waterfall that needed to be completed fast. The budget was tight and Gilbert didn’t like the noisy machinery near his pen. But I couldn’t walk away. I told Wildlife Images, “Let me take on the whole thing.” It was a challenge, but for Gilbert, it was worth it.
Our Solution: Craftsmanship Under Pressure
With a tight timeline and limited budget, we had to move fast without cutting corners. My apprentice and I handled the groundwork and prep, transforming the muddy hole into a solid foundation. On pour day, I brought in a crew of nine, including a highly skilled rock carver I’d admired for years. His expertise wasn’t cheap, but I worked free hours to make it happen, and my apprentice even volunteered a few days. Together, we poured and carved 22 yards of concrete to create a bear-proof waterfall, pond, and cozy bear cave—designed to feel like Gilbert’s natural habitat. Though we were not able to get as much detail as we would prefer, we were able to get in, get it done, and get out. On budget and just on time as it snowed 3 days later.
The Result: A Legacy for Gilbert
When we finished, Gilbert had a forever home that was more than a pen—it was a sanctuary. The waterfall cascades into a shimmering pond, surrounded by a rugged, natural-stone cave where he can rest and play. Seeing him explore his new space was a moment I’ll never forget. This project wasn’t about profit; it was about heart. My team and I poured our skills and passion into every detail, creating something that’ll last for Gilbert’s lifetime and beyond. I even plan to volunteer more time at Wildlife Images to keep supporting their mission.
